The ASEAN Basketball League – Everything You Need to Know

Basketball is one of the more popular sports on the planet. It is loved by many people and watched in many countries. Some people prefer the NBA to most other leagues, but that is just a preference. The NBA is preferred due to its high level of skill, but many people love watching their local leagues, for example, those in Europe and Asia.

Sports betting is a large part of sports, whether people like it or not. Online bookmakers definitely love sports and with that in mind, they often advertise their services and entice bettors to bet with promotional codes, like this Bet9ja bonus code. With more professional basketball being played everywhere, the bookmakers and punters have been enjoying it. The ASEAN Basketball League is one of those examples, or simply, the ABL.

If you are unfamiliar with it, here is everything you need to know.

The History of ABL

While some leagues date back almost a century, the ABL is barely a decade old. Yes, some leagues are much older, but that doesn’t mean that the ABL should be skipped. In fact, it makes it that much more important.

It was founded in 2009 in Kuala Lumpur and it includes East and Southeast Asia countries. There are currently 10 teams in the league, two from Taiwan, one from Hong Kong, two from Macau, and five from Southeast Asia. The teams included have changed due to plenty of reasons, but the current ones are the Formosa Dreamers and Taipei Fubon Braves from Taiwan, Macau Black Bears and Macau Wolf Warriors from Macau, Hong Kong Eastern from Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur Dragons from Malaysia, Mono Vampire from Thailand, Saigon Heat from Vietnam, San Miguel Alab Pilipinas from the Philippines and Singapore Slingers from Singapore.

How the League Works

The teams are divided into 2 groups of 5 teams. They will all play 26 games each, 13 away, 13 home. They will play each of the teams from their group twice, both home and away, making a total of 16 matches within their own group. They will also play the remaining five teams from the other group, twice, once home and once away, amounting to 10 more matches for a total of 26. The best 8 teams will advance to the Playoffs. The quarterfinals and semifinals are a best of 3, instead of a single elimination as you would expect from a playoff format. The finals are a best of 5.

The country with the most victories is the Philippines, followed by Indonesia, which doesn’t have a team competing at the moment. Indonesia is tied with Thailand with 2 wins each, and Thailand having a team at the moment means that they might eventually take the lead.

Singapore doesn’t have a single title, and neither does Vietnam. Each of the other competing countries have at least one title.

The ABL can be entertaining, so if you want more basketball to watch, make sure to tune in. Their season starts from November until March for the regular seasons, with Playoffs being not long after.
